George Sand, by marriage Baroness Dudevant, was a French novelist, playwright, letter writer, literary critic, and journalist, born in Paris in 1804 and who died at the Château de Nohant-Vic in 1876.
A central figure of the intellectual life of her time, George Sand moved in the circles of Chopin, Balzac, Flaubert, Delacroix, and other leading personalities. She also maintained an extensive correspondence with Victor Hugo.
Deeply attached to the Berry region, she was among the first to write about “country folk.” The area inspired several of her novels, including The Devil’s Pool, Little Fadette, and The Country Waifs.
In 1835, George Sand initiated legal proceedings against her husband, Casimir Dudevant. Their relationship had deteriorated due to Casimir’s extravagant lifestyle.
It was then suggested that she consult a renowned lawyer, Louis Michel—known as Michel de Bourges—to advocate for her final separation from Baron Dudevant.
In 1835, George Sand met Michel de Bourges. Captivated by her, he offered her an impassioned plea as they wandered the streets of Bourges together through the night.
Their attraction was mutual. She met him again in Paris that May, and they became lovers. Michel won her separation case after a long legal battle, on 16 February 1836.
George Sand dedicated the sixth of her Letters of a Traveller to “Éverard,” the affectionate name she gave Michel de Bourges. He also inspired the character of the lawyer Simon in the eponymous novel published in 1836.
You can discover George Sand and the world she lived in by visiting her home in Nohant-Vic, about an hour from Bourges.
